Every Sunday morning in our children's service,
I teach a giving lesson before tithes and offerings are collected. I feel
that it is very important to teach children that tithing to the local church
is a command and not an option. So you can imagine that I am always looking
for or coming up with new resources to teach the principle of tithing and
the fact that God is pleased when we do. In fact, he is so pleased that He
will return our obedience with blessings! Here we go!
Just a Calculator Scripture Reference: "Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this," says the LORD Almighty, "and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that you will not have room enough for it." Malachi 3:10
Needed: A calculator and a chalkboard orwhiteboard or large pad of paper or transparency and marker.
Purpose: To teach children that a tithe is ten percent of all we earn.
Presentation: 1. Ask for some dollar amounts from the class. I usually ask for examples of allowances or what amounts are earned for chores or special jobs.
2. Write the amounts on the board, paper or transparency.
3. Begin to ask if anyone knows how much ten percent is of each dollar amount. Allow some time for responses.
4. Calculate the amounts on a calculator and let volunteers read aloud the correct answers. Write the correct amount under the appropriate examples that were written down earlier.
5. Do some simple math and show that God doesn't expect much of us. He just wants back what is His.
